West Town is a larger neighborhood in Chicago comprised of several smaller neighborhoods, including Ukrainian Village, East Village, Noble Square and River West! While most of the area was part of Chicago’s original Polish Downtown, each smaller neighborhood within the neighborhood has its own charm!
Ukrainian Village is aptly named due to the dense settling of Ukrainians in the area during the 19th century, but while it remains populated with those of Eastern European descent, recent gentrification has changed the demographic in the neighborhood. To this day, notable ethnic and cultural landmarks include the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, the Ukrainian National Museum, the Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral, and St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral. Redfin named Ukrainian Village as its hottest neighborhood in America in 2016. East Village, like its neighbor, saw a large Eastern European influx, specifically from Poland, during and after World War II, but has also seen recent demographic changes resulting in an ethnically-diverse area!
Anchored by the neighborhood's namesake--a 207-acre masterpiece of urban landscaping--Humboldt Park's humble beginning as a peripheral neighborhood has given way to a dynamic area that seems to be in a constant state of reinvention. Locally focused yet always welcoming, the neighborhood's emphasis on creating a friendly and community-oriented atmosphere is what makes Humboldt Park a popular area for West Side residents.
